What is Botox and how does it work?

What is Botox?

Botox, also known as botulinum toxin, is a popular cosmetic treatment used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines on the face. This neurotoxin works by temporarily paralysing the muscles that cause wrinkles, leading to smoother and more youthful-looking skin.

Botox has been used for cosmetic purposes since the early 2000s and has become increasingly popular over the years.

While Botox is primarily used for cosmetic purposes, it also has a number of medical applications. For example, it can be used to treat conditions such as chronic migraines, excessive sweating, and muscle spasms.

So how does Botox work? When injected into the muscles, it blocks the signals from the nerves that control muscle movement, causing them to relax. This relaxation of the muscles leads to a reduction in the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

Botox is typically injected into specific areas of the face, such as the forehead, between the eyebrows, and around the eyes. The injections are relatively quick and typically take only a few minutes to complete. Most patients experience little to no pain during the procedure, although some may experience minor discomfort.

After the procedure, patients can typically return to their normal activities immediately. However, they may be advised to avoid strenuous exercise or other activities that could cause excessive sweating for a few hours.

The effects of Botox typically last for three to four months, after which time the injections will need to be repeated to maintain the desired results. Over time, some patients may find that they require less frequent injections as their muscles become trained to relax.

If you are considering Botox, it is important to do your research and choose a qualified and experienced provider. This will help to ensure that you achieve the best possible results and minimise the risk of complications.

In conclusion, Botox is a safe and effective cosmetic treatment that can help to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines on the face. With proper care and maintenance, it can provide long-lasting results and help you to look and feel your best.

Safety is our middle name.

As with any kind of injectable treatment, there are risks and side effects involved with injectable treatments like Botox and fillers that you should know about before going under the needle. The good news, though, is that these anti-wrinkle treatments are pretty low-risk, especially when carried out by qualified practitioners, like at EQlibrium clinic in Addlestone/ Weybridge.

What are the side effects and risks of Botox?

Okay, let’s start with some Botox side effects you could encounter. Most of these can be treated effectively with paracetamol and topical treatments, or by simply waiting for them to pass – so there’s not much to worry about! But, sometimes Botox results in:

  • A headache or flu symptoms
  • Some swelling and redness in the treated areas
  • Slight bruising and tenderness around the points of injection
  • Minor bleeding around injection sites
  • Dizziness and nausea

The above side effects might be quite annoying  but they should disappear shortly after the treatment. In rare cases, though, anti-wrinkle injections can cause more serious complications such as:

  • Temporary drooping in the eye area – AKA brow ptosis
  • Teary eyes or eye dryness
  • Drooling or an uneven mouth
  • Muscle weakness
  • Reduced or loss of bladder control

When Botox is injected around the eye area, visual impairment or visual difficulties can also sometimes arise. And, on rare occasions, people can experience breathing difficulties, trouble speaking and difficulty swallowing. But, again, this happens  very rarely. We have never witness any of these complications at EQlibrium.  If you do experience adverse, botulism-esque symptoms like these, make sure you seek medical assistance ASAP.

Is Botox right for me?

Botox risks and side effects aside, it’s also important to know if you’re a suitable candidate for this anti-ageing procedure. Botox is not recommended if:

  • You have a skin infection
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You have muscular diseases such as Bell’s Palsy, myasthenia gravis and ALS
  • You are currently taking certain medications, antibiotics or supplements
  • You have an allergy to any of the ingredients in Botox injections

Prior to any anti-wrinkle treatment, we will take a detailed medical history, to determine the correct treatment plan for you.

Our safety practises ensure we have minimal risks and complications.

Derma 2.0 Eye aftercare instructions

After Derma 2.0 Eye treatments we recommend

  • maintain a normal heart rate,
  • avoid touching, rubbing, or physical pressure on the affected area
  • leave the treated area alone

as this can increase the risk of bruising.

Wait 24 hours to exercise

If exercise is part of your daily routine, wait at least 24 hours to work out.

Physical activity increases blood flow. This could potentially spread the treatment to unintended areas and reduce its effectiveness at the injection site. It also increases the risk of bruising. Sweating is also more likely to increase chances of infection.

Go makeup-free

If you received a injection in your face, take a break from makeup for 24 hours. Applying makeup will rub the skin, and potentially clog the injection site which could result in infection.

Avoid other skin treatments

Derma 2.0 Eye needs some time to settle in. For the first 3 days, avoid other skin treatments like:

  • peels
  • facials
  • exfoliating scrubs

Getting these treatments too soon may irritate your treatments.

can I drink alcohol before my treatment?

Drinking alcohol is not recommended before a treatment as it can thin the blood leading to a higher risk of bruising and swelling.

How can I prepare for my treatment ?

  • Taking arnica supplements before your treatment can help minimise risk of bruising
  • Staying hydrated can help minimise risk of bruising and swelling.
  • Let your practitioner know prior to the treatment if you are on any blood thinning medications.
